Thanks for the experienced input Leonard!
I've seen this done, but I think ONLY touch based "go" (not actually saying "GO!") might work better...not lip reading, no lack of sync between touch/audible signal.
OK I accept what you're saying here, however I'd still rather have it as fair as possible in Canada - we can be leaders by example if it works better.
Interesting! I've thought of this system as well. The benefit is that the timing should be standardized red..yelow..green so everyone has an equal chance of anticpating the green. The drawback is the lack of slow motion cameras/other expensive technology to detect if someone moved before the green (the "human error" problem you wrote about).
To rely on reaction time abilities, strength and technique (no timing skills needed):
1) Just say "GO", without warning...very good, with drawback that people must "lip read" to get the fastest start.
2) It the future we can discourage lip readers by making this a random buzzer or light/buzzer (NOT the red - yello - green type system), or trying the "touch-only" system I suggested previously.
3) Does anybody like the idea of trying this "touch-only" system, because nobody has commented on this at all, and I'm wondering if this might be the perfect solution. It worked great at practice.
As for the touch signal when we used the simple go we removed the hand on top at the same time for a visual start in addition to the verbal go.

The United States Armwrestling Association, which I am the president, used this start system for many years. The problem with it is that when all of your pullers get used to this start system and then go to the states or to the WAF World Championship.......they will not get good starts.
This is not speculation, we lived it and changed our starts. We did not do this because the ready go was better but because we were putting our pullers at an disadvantage when they went to other big shows.

There were a couple of associations that used lights to signal the start like a drag race start with red, yellow and then green and it came down to determining with human error on if they started before the green or not.
