I've been doing some number crunching on the number of entries per class at Nationals. At last year's Nationals we had 64 classes. My proposal would drop that to 36 classes.
Here is the break down of my proposal in kg: Right and Left Mens 65 70 75 80 85 90 100 110 110+ Mens Master 80 90 90+ Grand Masters 80 80+
Ladies 65kg 65kg+ Ladies Masters 80 80+ If you like I can show each average class size average over the past 5 Nationals. Feel free to comment.

This would be an excellent group of classes. Nothing drastic, and still in line with WAF.
My only suggestions would be:
Switch the mens masters classes to 80,100,100+ Possibly have a 60,70,70+ split for the ladies open classes
Either way, this is a major step in the right direction!

A little perspective on why I dropped so many Ladies classes: right now 14 ladies open classes with an average class size of 1.94, 8 ladies master classes with an average of 1.18.

Rick, with more pullers getting to the masters age do you see an upward trend in the Masters? dropping 5 to 3 classes might be a little to drastic maybe . 70,80,90,100+ Grandmasters 80 and 80+ will give us more completion though ,but personally 85kg , 85+ .

Seems like a tricky business when it comes to classes because trends change over time.
Would it be possible to have a bit of a flex system where classes only run if a minimum number of people show up? If the minimum don't show up, a competitor can jump to the next class.
I know this would be hard to plan in terms of medals, but maybe there are ways around that too?

Looks good Rick ... Years ago we did not have all those classes and we still had a great time at the Canadians ... you entered to test your self not drop a few pounds or enter up to avoid pulling someone. All these classes have made it a very costly event to host and it takes so long to run. In the 70's we had no youth classes or masters classes ... it was if you thought you were tough ... you brought it to the table! The under-dog was always a surprise and there was many great matches to be seen ... plus your matches were closer together which help keep the pump going.
There also was less rules and fouls that a person can abuse ... what ever happened to the slow load, set up and go? It stopped all the fast starts and slipping out ... which adds so much more time to our tournaments ... it used to be a real strength sport ... and now its if you have a fast start or you can win on fouls. How many pullers enjoy pulling afterwards where you can just load up against each other and really feel how strong you are ... and I ask ... how many slip outs do you see or even fouls?
Anyways ... hopefully the weight classes at the Canadians can be changed and it will have a better impact on the turn out ... plus bring the cost down.

I'd like to cut back even more but this is a qualifier for Worlds so we have to keep some resemblence to World classes.
Also as Darrell mentioned that times are changing and I feel we have to be a little more pro-active on these changing demographics. If numbers start changing in one or more areas we should be quicker be reflect these changes.
