Slightly off topic
I think the 30 seconds is bs, 60 is fine. I also think that not penalizing the delayer of the grip is the biggest mistake. IMO the rules are fine if they are enforced strictly. Competitors think they can just manipulate their opponent and get to a ref's grip at will with no warnings or fouls. This is where the game falls apart (again IMO).
Warn/foul the one purposely delaying the grip, make the competitors get their grip and make them go. Ref's grip is like babysitting.
I also don't think 30 secs speeds the tourneys up. The guys then saunter over to the chalk bowl and re chalk... recompose themselves, re shake hands, re set their stance blah blah blah blah.. boring
/end rant

It's still 60 seconds, until it is voted on.

Ha ha- so true! To eliminate all the sauntering would be great! How though? I wish guys would just go as if it were a fight, no resting in between setups for the same opponent. I like the instigator foul too!

WAF has changed to 30 seconds. We may as well follow suit.

I like the 30sec rule, however I do agree with John that it will increase time not decrease. And I also agree that the refs need to be less hesitant on issuing warning/fouls for the athlete not setting up.
I can see some people just taking advantage of this to benifit themselves going straight to refs grip

I would prefer to see in the first thirty seconds that the refs are patient and allow the competitors to feel each other out. The refs should tell the athletes where they need to go to get the match started, without threatening immediate refs grips or handing out warnings this early, unless there is a obvious intention to delay. Between 30 - 60 seconds the referee should decide who is delaying the startup by giving direct instructions and give out warnings when instructions are not followed or if the situation seems hopeless, go immediately into refs grip. At 60 seconds a warning or a refs grip should be called.
