Thats a valid point John. Limiting applicants due to participation is probably not helping numbers.
But there are two sides to that, would provincials have the same volume if it's no longer required for Nats

"Promoter should have the right to hire local score keepers and refs. This would save the promoter tons of $$" i have to agree with chris on this, i dont know the exact amounts it costs for refs and officials but if we are able to cut costs somewhere it could be there.

I think most of the time Nationals will end of in Ontario anyways due to lack of bid somewhere else, but seems unfair to me to exclude a willing host like A.D. in Vancouver from hosting a nationals.
If on average every second year Nationals was in Ontario, I wouldn't mind (50% armwrestling population, was it?). I think the people willing to bid on this event will naturally fit the population of armwrestlers per region anyways. If it works out that nobody else wants to do them, and only Ontario does, then fine; just don't have to legislate this as the only location IMO.

Believe it or not when I posted this thread it was mainly due to this years nats and the rumbelings in Ontario about Nats. I look at all the effort AD put in to his event as far as going to run arrons for people and purchaseing personal items for there convience was too me a sign of love for his fellow armwrestling comunity. I had spent almost three grand for a weekend in germany for the armwars Last may. there fore this time around I could not afford it plus takeing a personal finacial hit on my MLA event didn't help but it was still worth it. I would love to go to B.C for a NATS in the future but I am snake bitten by the fact no one showed up. I have never been to B.C. Edmonton is as far west that i have been I am afaraid if I went I would stay lol I hear it's like the tropics of Canada lol! great debate none the less!

I have been reading all the comments from everyone so far on this topic, and I have to say that you all have made some very interesting and valid points. I would typically choose to stay out of conversations like this, but I feel this topic has sparked a need to respond to this. I am writing this to express my opinion, and hopefully not to offend anyone. If you take offense to this, tough crap for you…..just kidding! ;D
Provincially in Saskatchewan, we struggle with numbers for entries. We are going through a phase of rebuilding and finding out how to utilize the talents of the people who are volunteering their time, to run the organization in Saskatchewan. For us, it seems that many times the travel in our own Province can become a hindrance to some.
As a competitor, more times than not over the past years, I have had little or no one to compete against even at Nationals. Leaving me always with a decision to travel and not compete, or compete in higher weight classes. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind doing this, because I am still supporting the sport and my team mates. Bottom line, I do it because I love arm wrestling!
I entered this sport because of my own competitive spirit and the challenge it gives me as a competitor and as a team mate. If there is one thing I can say about this sport, there is always something to learn and someone better than you to compete against.
As a President, organizer and promoter of armwrestling I would love to see more turn out at Provincial and National events first and then focus on the World events. Unfortunately, I think that politics, people’s own agendas and self serving interests can interfere too much with this progress sometimes. I also think it can be very easy to forget where you started your armwrestling career (circuit tournaments, provincials, etc.).
I think now, arm wrestlers are faced with so many decisions about the different types of tournaments out there, and this affects the decisions for where they travel to compete.
Just my opinion, but I believe that flexibility is going to be key to the success of arm wrestling provincially and nationally. No one will have all the answers, but as a collective, we can definitely start supporting each other in a more productive way to achieve a higher level of success. As well, I think that being open to new ideas from other people, is a great start! There are reasons that some have been so successful at hosting and promoting events, and I would like to hear from those people.
I for one want to continue to work together as a whole to achieve a high standard of event planning, promotion, referring, and above all represent my Province and Nation at a standard that I can be proud of, as well as my fellow arm wrestlers.
I would love to bid on Nationals for 2014, but I want to feel confident that as a Province we can host and provide a great event for those committing to travel and come to Nationals!
