Tyerrell I for one respect you as a True champion and an excellent elite puller. Fact. OK now name me 4 others in your category in your province, or any for that matter.
I'm sorry if you feel my statements cheapens the sport or accomplishments by stating facts. Plus I may not be a terribly smart man but I am logical.
1. You can paint me as the bad guy if you want to because I am the whistle blower on a subject that has really picked up steam off the public boards. For Matt and Dan this goes for you guy's as well. We can try and hold on to a failing system or we can work with the assets we have and try to improve from within, I.E. an oil tanker spills oil in the ocean after one hour the oil surrounds the ship after two hrs 200 meters after a week several kilometers. By using Ontario as the Flagship province and really ramping it up financially and exposure. Outsiders may be shocked to see where the sport has evolved to. if we continue to to spread our resources thin we will end up with disgruntled Promoters and uninterested sponsors.
Build a strong centralized network . I.E. message boards magazines radio and T.V and more than once a month. You will start seeing more of a demand Else where as the oil spill gets bigger!
I have a extrem sports magazine that is willing to dedicate an entire annual issue to the MGC. And you know why? Because it is the only for sure stable annual event with elite pullers. Don't tell me it wouldn't work because it already has.
I may be pitted as the poster child that started this thread that brought about the end if you will but like all elephants in the room that get ignored for too long they eventually sit on you.
So where do we stand? for the few = fair or the many = survival & relevance?

ian, ontario doesn't know how good they have it with all the great tourneys/circuits going on over there. something to be very proud of, it is the flagship province for armwrestling for sure. but if they can't break through to the main stream with what they already have, i doubt having nats there perminatly will help. be happy with what there is but don't try to take more then whats deserved.

In 2008, I drove to Saskatchewan from Sudbury, for a total of 28 hours. I had a great trip and a great experience. My weight class(143lbs) only had 5 entries, with 2 Ontario pullers including myself. It was my first year aw, I placed 2nd both arms qualifying me for worlds. The National level competition gave me confidence that I could compete against World caliber pullers, this was untrue, costing me more money to go to Worlds. I have been to tougher competitioins in every region in Ontario. I have no problem traveling, but why, when I could spend much less and pull tougher opponents in my own backyard? I think who ever has the most cash to run the event and offers incentives for the podium pullers, should run Nationals. Whether it stays central or not, should depend on the promoters of the sport.

brad great to see you back pulling. i thought you trimmed down to the 143 class rather then pulling the 154's(which had more pullers and are always tougher? as a first year puller and going to worlds was nothing to sneeze at, the choice was yours to travel and spend the money, you probably learned more going to worlds and not living up to your expectations(i know i did) then if you would have stayed in ontario beating up on people.

AD it's something I have been thinking about but at the moment my popularity nationally must be at an all time low! If I were to bid it would be a collaborative bid with some partners. As I feel very strongly about regaining the prestige's of our Nationals I feel (MATT) that it's not about deserving or fairness it's a function of economics and reality. A turn out in any Ontario Nats will most likely be larger than our Provincials which equals a successful event.
Back to my bid I would ensure that I would speak with many local sponsors and other sponsors if they would be willing to aid in this effort. I would ensure that T.V. covered it as well as armsportvideos. I am not saying that I am better than anyone AD and if we were having a face to face brother you know how much of a huge fan I am of you and how much I love this sport.
For those who don't know I am in the Army and in many cases there are sacrifices of assets and ground if the line is run thin. If you scale back your resources to a centralized location and fortify your defenses you now have a strong hold on a defensive position and you'll last longer. right now with the coverage that the Toronto pro super-show got with such few entries I wonder what "with some clever organization with the Super show" would a Nationals held on that weekend with thousands of spectators be like? I bet getting our own stage wouldn't be o far out and a tone of chairs. I spoke with the CO director last June of the Super show and he was thrilled about the buzz the arm wrestling was stirring. Imagine a Nat's where the crowed was filled up with other than arm wrestlers what it could do for our sport. Because you never know who's in the crowed?

If you lived on our side mr. Gobby I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune as well.

Hey Ian, if you are thinking about putting in a bid you should.. maybe even as a group hosted by your club if that works better. I wouldn't worry about popularity, if it's in Ontario it will be a great turnout & I will come support your event.
I agree with you that in Ontario it will be a success with a large number of entries. My only concern is the fairness to other provinces.
Here is something for EVERYONE from EVERY province to think about.. Let's say at WAF Worlds they said from now on we want worlds to be held in EUROPE only every year because there are more countries there & there will be better entry numbers & it will be tougher to win there. You can't host if you are in little North America.. Yes the entries would probably be higher & Yes the competition would probably be tougher. Does this mean it's better all around for the sport? How would everyone in Canada feel about this?

Edmontonarm- you could very well be right
Anthony, ideally you're right. It is better for aw as a whole to move around geographically. However... In Canada, the boat is sinking. Registration fee's keep going up and awards seem to get cheaper (to minimize overhead cost for promoter). This is eventually going to lead to a possible year where we won't see a nationals event. There is a fundamental issue that needs to be rectified. If it does not... Holding nats in central location might be one of the options to keep our championship afloat.
