I would like to convey my extreme appreciation to Dr. Jason Plotsky at Nova Spinal Care in Halifax for sponsoring me ShockWave Therapy and Fascia Scraping in order to prepare and train for the 2015 World Championships in Malaysia.
Shockwave Therapy in my own words;
Imagine you are a Grand Piano, the strings of the piano are the tendons in your arms, now pile on layers of mud and let it dry (years of training and injuries). Now, take a pressure washer and blast off the piano strings. This is what ShockWave Therapy is to me; blasting off the built up scar tissue from years of training, competing, and injuries.
Background
I am 35 years old and have been Arm-Wrestling for 15 years in Nova Scotia. In this time I have earned 16 Provincial titles, six Atlantic Canadian titles, 15 National titles, placed fourth at the World Championships in South Africa in 2004 and earned a Bronze Medal at the World Championships in Poland in 2013.
At the Worlds in 2004, during a match with Russia, I hyperextended my brachial tendon on my right arm. If you do not know where this are it, every arm wrestler experiences this type of pain in their inner elbow area just above the funny bone. For years after this, I trained, competed, and pushed through the agony thinking it would just go away.
In 2011, the pain in my right arm was so severe that I couldn’t touch the side of my face with my right palm. I was unable to open a door right handed and couldn’t drive with my right arm. I knew I had to either retire my arm permanently or seek further help.
Also in 2011, I was diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel in both wrists. My doctor booked me in immediately for surgery for my wrists which I quickly refused. After doing a lot of research, I stumbled upon Nova Spinal Care. I went in for a consultation to discuss my wrists and we got on the topic of Arm Wrestling and my injuries.
Dr. Plotsky was formerly a high level baseball player. He immediately understood the type of injury I had which is similar to an overhead throwing sport. He recommended 5 sessions of Shockwave Therapy.
During my 5 sessions, I ensured I did not train, which was extremely hard and I took double doses of NutraSea Fish Oil to help flush out the toxins. Each session was approximately 5 minutes each arm and was a week a part from each other.
Three weeks later, after going from not being able to touch my face, I was able to compete at the Nationals winning the 143lb class weighing 132lb. This was a drastic change in my arm.
Currently
During the semi-finals against Russia at the World Championships in Poland 2013, I strained my Ulner Collateral Ligament (UCL). The inner elbow region.

I trained with it and competed for a couple years but not to the level I was expected to at my rank. Just recently, I competed at the 2015 Nationals and severely damaged the UCL further on my right arm worse than what happened in 2004. Unfortunately I had every intention on representing Team Canada again at the Worlds in Malaysia but this injury was stopping me.
I contacted Dr. Plotsky and asked for his help. He and the team at Nova Spinal Care graciously offered to sponsor me a full ShockWave Therapy Treatment to help me represent Canada.
I started my treatment on 28 May and have done 1 week intervals between sessions. When I arrived on the 28th, Dr. Plotsky assessed the damaged area and further offered another service called Fascia Scraping. Holy crap! This stuff is the real deal. With anti-inflammatory ointment, he scrapes the affected areas in my arm, loosening and breaking up scar tissue, burs, and damage which allows the blood system to flush it out. Then he continues with ShockWave Therapy.
Week #1
Week #3
Week #4
As you can see from the weekly pictures, the damaged areas are getting less and less to the point where the reddening will cease.
I am now back in the gym training and Arm Wrestling prepping for Malaysia
What Does This All Mean?
I can honestly say, this is the best treatment an Arm Wrestler can get to not only heal damage that is lingering but it is a prefect preventative therapy for damage that could occur. It allows you to compete and train with tendons that feel fresh and ready to strengthen.
Once I fell in love with Arm Wrestling, which all of you can attest, I had to except the fact that my arms will never be pain free. I think the reason is that when we start out; we concentrate on strength and training in the gym, and Arm Wrestling and multiple tournaments. We rarely take the time to think about the proper recovery to our tendons to maintain this training and increasing the longevity of these tendons.
This treatment is perfect for beginners and for the old fellas that are stubborn to training through the pain.
I would like to express how thankful I am to Dr. Plotsky and his team for giving me the opportunity again to compete at the World Championships this year in Malaysia
Dr. Plotsky is offreing the combined service (ShockWave Therapay & Fascia Scraping) for $80.00 a session. This is probably the lowest rate in North America and I encourage all Arm Wrestlers to try this as it can take your training to a higher level.
