At first I didn't get it when Gord suggested this, but now I think qualifying top____ is absolutely necessary way to make provincials worthwhile (like every other sport I can think of!). However...unfortunately conventional double elimination tournaments will not cut it for finding the top pullers due to the luck factor.

Great thread Ryan... I think that if you don't have to qualify it makes things better for YOU personally perhaps.. but if you do have to qualify it makes things better for THE SPORT. The sport is more important than one individual.. I am all for trying out new ideas if they make sense but in the end it has to be better for the sport, not better for me. AD you make some great points especially about being hurt before Provincials. However I have to disagree with you when it comes to limiting the number to the top ___ would be better for the sport. The host needs as many entries as possible to make it a success. Also I may not have placed in the top ___, but my training partner, spouse or kids have and I'll go to support them and pull while I'm there, again more money for the host. if we had sponsors and funding to help alleviate the hosts expenses or if we have 20-30 entries per class I could see us looking at this. Every Province would need to be using the same weight classes as Nationals. Herein lies anther problem in that most provinces, especially the smaller ones don't run all the same classes as Nationals. If you plan on attending Worlds you need to time your training in order that you peak at that time and you'll need to peak at Nationals so you qualify. If you have a very tough class Provincially it is extremely difficult to peak 3 times a year.

Attending provincials is an easy qualifier to nationals,(regardless of their placing that day),for people who are serious about and dedicated to armwrestling.

Everyone has good points, may I suggest they nationals should be open to all pullers within Canada PROVIDING they pay their dues towards provincials? Paying dues means attendance to compete, helping with the event or paying a set fee for a bye process?
This is what I was used to in Ontario, and it seemed to work very well IMO.
rick is right, it is hard to peak multiple times a year, but it's hard when event organizers tend to not communicate and organize events fairly. for an example, if I wanted to attend all the tournaments I have available to me at the moment, I'd have the following;
1) MGC- March 27-29th 2) BC provincials - April 12th (It was just announced to me yesterday) 3) nationals - may long weekend.
It can be a tough draw. Hence why provincials and Nationals should be spaced out better.
I would suggest that provinces consider hosting provincials at the start of the year (january). That gives the regular pullers more time in between the "essential" tournaments to peak better.

Starting next year Nationals will move to the July 1 long weekend. That will give the Provinces more time for Provincials.

Just to add - if anyone can show up at nationals to pull , what do you do if pullers show and they don't have a provincial shirt . According to the rules you cant pull with out a team shirt .
The way I see it having a Provincials creates more interest for competing at the Nationals , it gets the competitive juices flowing. Definitely a Provincial champion would want to know how he/she stacks again pullers from across Canada. In Manitoba our Provincials is the Premiere event of the year, Awards to reflect the accomplishment of placing top 3 , and by being a part of this event , you qualify to represent your Province at the Nationals.

I have locked the poll... now the next question is, should the CAWF govern this so the process is the same for every province?

Why would you do anything to restrict people from attending? Let everyone go; it makes for a better tournament. This way you build a strong team to send to the worlds; so much talk about changing this and changing that... A few months back I attended the Washington State Championships and it was a great tournament; lots of pullers, great matches, and the place was full wall to wall with people cheering; the atmosphere was electric; you know what made it so good? No whining, no politics, just good old fashioned pulling... it was a breath of fresh air; get back to what this sport is supposed to be...men and women giving it their all for the love of the sport.
