Recently there has been some controversy over who should go to Nationals and how they should qualify. I am curious how everyone else feels about this.

There is such a lack of consistency from province to province now that maybe it is time we opened the Nationals to all Canadians.

I think everyone should participate with their provincial body. We need to support our local tournements and if making it a qualifier for nationals just for attending, so be it

Will I used to agree with you that making people participate at the Provincials to go to Nationals really helped the local scene... now I am not so sure. It seems the local events will survive either way as in some provinces there are practices like allowing a "bye" as long as a cheque is written. It does not seem to have deterred anyone.

I am ok with nationals being open to all pullers, mandatory attendance to provincials or a BYE process. I just feel that all provinces should be on the same page with the provincials/nationals setup for attendance.
Why should everyone from alberta have the free reins to attend nationals without having to pull, put forth help for provincials (for attendance to nationals) or pay a bye fee, but a BC resident has to attend/pay bye/or help with event to attend nationals in our own province?
I am not saying im losing sleep over it, but people have to travel just as far within this province to attend provincials or pay their dues to attend. BC should have a full attendance of our province's roster considering it is in BC.
just my two cents.

Dan I agree with your points but the problem is that the provinces will never be on the same page unless the CAWF regulates them. The other option is to control the criteria with which we will allow a competitor to attend Nationals. I would not be surprised that if we opened Nationals to all Canadians there would be no impact to Provincials.
FYI Alberta went from being the most restrictive (only the top 2 from the province qualifying) to the least restrictive all within a few days.

Just curious, if anyone knows, do any other countries have qualifying tourneys for their nationals? I know USA doesn't and Canada does but have no idea about others

Correction, Alberta went from the top 4 qualifying to not needing to qualify.

Great thread Ryan...
I find this to be a difficult answer because I can see good and bad from every choice in this scenario.
*Open to all Canadians* Good- Some people walk in off the street, new pullers perhaps, easy for everyone to do. Bad- maybe a rookie shows up and gets hurt, maybe pullers avoid their smaller Provincial event which is not good for the sport. Maybe Provincials will DIE if people aren't required to attend so nobody bothers to. Could hurt the promoter for provincials.
*Anyone who attends their Provincials* Good- keeps us supporting the provincial championships, good warm up for nationals. Bad- maybe not everyone can make it (this doesn't stop people though, example. getting a bye)
*Top 4 at Provincials qualifies you* Good- You have to earn your spot, sounds more prestigious. If the #'s are low it wouldn't make a difference anyways but looks better on paper. Bad- Might keep someone away from nationals if they had a bad/sick day at Provincials (low chance for this in my opinion) May lead to less entries in certain provinces (this wouldn't be an issue in BC since our #'s aren't high here)
(here is a rare scenario to think about. In this exact moment, my right wrist is hurt.. so if I went to our BC Provincials and didn't pull because it's hurt and the TOP 4 winners are all going to Nationals since it's right here in BC.. does that mean that me, the CURRENT national champion can't go attend Nationals with my Right arm because I was hurt at Provincials, even though I could be healed up by Nationals and ready to defend my title?) (But I can ref to qualify.. But what if I wasn't a qualified ref, then what? See where this is going..)
In the end.. whichever choice is made we all know that you can't please everyone. Some people will be happy and some will be upset. I think that if you don't have to qualify it makes things better for YOU personally perhaps.. but if you do have to qualify it makes things better for THE SPORT. The sport is more important than one individual.. I am all for trying out new ideas if they make sense but in the end it has to be better for the sport, not better for me.

Correction, Alberta went from the top 4 qualifying to not needing to qualify. Remove the brackets from my sentence and it is accurate. I am all for trying out new ideas if they make sense but in the end it has to be better for the sport, not better for me. Well said Anthony. For me, I attend provincials anyway but sometimes do not pull because SOMETIMES there is not a lot of competition and I would rather see someone else earn a title and maybe continue on to Nationals. Under the current system we have in Manitoba, I always qualify for Nationals.
