The Saturday nearest July 1 or Victoria Day.
The CAWF board can vote between those options.
For example, if July 1 falls on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday then the tournament starts on the following Saturday; and if July 1 falls on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday then the tournament starts on the preceding Saturday.
2015, 2020 and 2026 are then only years until 2037 (when my calendar runs out) that would have a Wednesday statutory holiday. There are a few Tuesdays and Thursdays in there, but obviously there are mostly Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. If Nationals is not on a three-day weekend then competitors can choose to book off work (or not) and have the option of a four or five day weekend for Nationals.

Does nine or ten weeks between Nationals and Worlds give enough time to properly assemble Team Canada? I assume a bit of time is given to those who qualify at Nationals to decide whether or not they will be attending Worlds. Then going down the list to fill open spots can take some time as well. Can most people book a week off work with only one or two months' notice? What about ordering uniforms, obtaining visas, etc?
These are some of the questions I have. I'd like to hear from those who have plans on attending future World Championships.
It sounds like many people don't have an issue with the weekend closest to Canada Day, even though it may not always be a three-day weekend. I'd just like to know if a Canada Day weekend nationals would have a negative impact on the assembly of Team Canada.

In 2011 Nationals were in Ottawa the first weekend in September, Worlds were in Kazakhstan the first weekend of December, a full 3 months later. This was the toughest year I can remember trying to get visas. I would say that 3 months is the closest I would like to see between nationals and worlds.
I vote for May long weekend.

Yeah, the provincial presidents might vote on this one like Gord said - these votes for everyone hardly ever work out good it seems (participation is spotty at best, not a great representation of what the majority wants anyways).

Maybe the provincial presidents should poll the pullers in their Province to see what the majority wants before going to PEI this year. Then discuss and vote at the AGM .

It cost me about $80 (to expedite the process) and it took 3 or 4 days to get my visa for Brazil.
To Eric's point, which is valid, I'd hope that competitors at Nationals can think about this before Nationals and maybe look into flight prices so that they can decide right at Nationals if it is likely that they will go to Worlds (if they make the top 2 etc.)

I agree it would be nice if people could decide at Nationals. There will be a process in place, where the top 2 have 2 weeks from nationals date to decide if they are going before the next 2 become eligible. In turn each 2 will then have 3 days to decide before the next 2 become eligible. 30 days after Nationals the team will be complete.
I will have a guide lines put into place very soon.

That is great Joey. I hope that the guideline includes a methodology to determine who will be able to compete in classes like the 70kg Master Men and the 80kg Senior Men. We shouldn't be dealing with this only after the tournament as it can impact which classes some want to pull. This year is a good practice year for such a system as there is likely low demand for WAF from Canada, but next year will likely be a different story (and we will want all the bugs worked out).

I'm not in charge of who qualifies only taking care of who qualified. I'm planning on pulling 80kg Grand master and I'm interested to know how to qualify as well.

your right Joey ,Grand masters reduced to 2 classes now . say if I weigh in at 80kg and have intentions pulling the 90kg at the worlds , i cant qualify for the 70 kg at worlds because im to heavy. (the WAF classes are 70 90 90+) So you have to fill the 2 spots for 90kg from 2 classes (80 and the 80+) .Ya I know Im beating a dead horse again . BTW you might see me in the 80 kg .
