Nationals was broken for a long time. We are now trying to fix it. Those of us that promoted the Nationals and tried to give away an award worthy of a National title ended up losing our shirts. In years gone by I personally made motions for cost cutting measures that were turned down time after time (like having every ref stay in their own room with two double beds). Now we have less classes, more pulling, less cost of running the event, and set awards. Hopefully these changes will lead to a better turnout (or at least a fuller class).

I hope so too Ryan
I'm super pumped for this year!
I must say though as far as awards, Ryan put out the best ones when he hosted last

Anthony had pretty cool medals at his Nationals in Vancouver - they looked awesome with the skeletons from their club logo.

Will... imagine would I could have done with less weight classes.
With these changes I am considering hosting again. Prior to the changes I never would have.

I still think the armwrestling lumberjacks statues were the nicest award I have ever seen. Kelowna 1997. It was my first Nationals and they were just for first place. There was trophies for 2nd and 3rd.
Rick P and Perry B. won their classes that year.
The wooden ones Charlie had in 2009 were nice too.

Yeah Mark I remember those. It was my first Nationals and Terry DeBaets was the only Manitoban to bring one home. Those things were awesome.
I also don't mind a traditional trophy once in a while. I liked the ones Eric gave away in Ottawa.

By having addressed some of the fixed costs associated with hosting Nationals (i.e. staff lodging, number of awards), it should now free up promoters to focus an increased percentage of their budget on awards. This will help pullers feel like they are getting better value for their entry fee.

PEI will have medallions but it sounds like they'll be real nice. I think the Juniors are getting the same as open.

No doubt, a statue or wooden trophy can make a nice momento, and I'd love to have one for first. However ...
Has anyone ever actually thought "I'm not going to nats this year because the awards are cheap"?
What I am getting at is that there are a great many factors that can be good our bad, but when and how do they affect someone's decision to attend nats.
