In Canada for sure , a lot of pullers missed out on a great and fun Nationals. for being in Ontario there was a lot of Ontario pullers that didnt show . But as always the pullers that did attend made it a great Nationals . I would like to see next year in Alberta ( Heh Jeff ) or in Sask . This year I am working on some big incentives for Team Manitoba pullers to go to 2014 nationals.

It's not the resort part. People thought that you can fly to a resort in Mexico and stay a week for the same price as flying 3/4 across Canada.

Keep the Nationals in Canada. Some cash prizes (at least enough for top finishers to partially offset travel costs) would help with the attendance. Holding Canadian Nationals in another country, in my opinion, is WRONG.

It Should be in Canada, seems this augment comes up every year. Just put it in the same place every yr (Toronto or Winnipeg) central. DIRECT FLIGHTS ! Easiest way to go. numbers will improve if you can plan of a Nat's couple yrs in advance as a puller imo would help numbers As for the idea of Mexico i get it, Cost me $ 1350 to go to Timmins this yr (2days). Booked a trip to Mexico cost $1354 all inclusive (a week) and a direct flight.

It cost me more than 1350 to go to Timmins. Flights and hotels could have been only that much if I had not opted for an upgrade; however, food and local transportation are on top of that. The same goes for most nationals in Canada. I have gone to Cuba for a week of all-inclusive beach life for less than any Nationals has cost me.
The reason why the Mexico idea won't work is that no one will take the bull by the horns and simply make it happen.
However, for those not within driving distance of Nationals, it would be cheaper, longer and double as a vacation.

While some might like Nationals to double as a week-long vacation, I'd bet there are more who would see an event of this length as an obstacle. For those with plans of going to Worlds, it would require two weeks of vacation a year for armwrestling. Most people have limited vacation time, and if you have a family, chances are they don't you to use all of your vacation for armwrestling. This is the main reason I've never attended Worlds. If it was a weekend event, I'd be there most years. (I realize the logistical limitations of running such a large event.)
A Nationals down south would have less than 100 entries. It already isn't fun when there are only 4-5 pullers in your class. It would be even less fun if there were only 2-3.

I had 3 in my 85kg Right class in Vancouver, and in Timmins the open men's 85kg Left, 90kg Right, 60kg Right all had 3 entries, and the 60kg L had 2 entries. Unfortunately, we are not addressing this problem if we keep doing things the same way - I feel a little bad for Joanne as Timmins will likely have just as bad a turnout next year if not worse.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate she's stepped up to the plate and worked so hard, but we (the CAWF) need a new plan to be successful in the future.

Del has presented an intriguing idea on this forum at least a couple of different times:
- Eastern Canadian Championships - Western Canadian Championships - Top 2 each class compete in a Nationals four-person tournament style West 1 vs East 2, East 1 vs West 2 in first round. Hopefully we can get some sponsorship through WestJet or whatever to offer "travel money" to the winners of each class. Currently due to the enormous amount of classes offered, it would be hard to pay out to all the classes, but this could be worked out with the details.
Nationals is only for the top pullers...if nobody wants to go in a specific class, say 85kg for example, the option to go to worlds would go to 1st place finisher of East (using a coin toss to determine East/West), then 1st place of the West (or East coin toss went other way), then 2nd place East, and 2nd place West. (edit July 31, 2013, OR you just don't qualify for worlds if you fail to go to Nationals)
This Nationals would have only pre-registered athletes, so you know exactly what to prepare for.
What do you guys think? Personally, I like to say thanks to Del for this great idea.

If I was going to a Nationals down south, I wouldn't be making a vacation out of it. It would have to be set up in such a way that I could still just use my long weekend to get there and return to work. I'm sure this would be possible, but I wouldn't be making it a week long event.
