Ive got a question that probably has a simple answer but here it goes anyways. My hook is pretty good when in an offensive position but it seems like when I catch someone in a hook and Im in a losing position I dont have much strength and cant hold people off. What can I do to strengthen this on the table as well in the weight room? Is the bicep the most important muscle group when in a hook and in a defensive or losing position? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys
Austin

For what it's worth from a rookie like myself.
I've been finding that working by butt off in a defensive hook at practiice has been doing loads of help. and now that I've been starting to climb rope it has been helping a ton with being able to hold that static postition that a defensive hook puts you in.

Austin, if you are trying to bicep curl your opponent from a losing position... that is you problem. The bicep cannot generate the force to come back from that position in most cases. Instead you should be applying backpressure with your lat and brach. trying to drag your opponent to your side and at least trying to get to a position where you are both flat wristed.
This of course is just my opinion.

I expected this thread to get more attention. I figured more people might chime in with opinions here. I find this to be a weak area for myself as well Austin. I seem to be able to pin if I can get my hook in and go offensive but defensively I seem to need some work. If you look in the training logs I try to incorporate table workouts to help me in this area. As far as techniques that work best here, I'm not sure I have found something that works great yet but I will try some of the things Mr. Espey shared.

I posted this on the ITH with Devon Larrat thread, but in case you missed it here it is again. Devon answers your question here with special guest Eric "The Destroyer" Roussin: www.inthehook.com/devon/defensive_hook.wmv
