Ryan, Some people talk about a low toproll to stop a hook but Ive never figured out how to do it. I grip high as well. What is a low toproll and do you ever use it? I think a low hand toproll is when you "punch" your wrist outwards (away from his wrist) to attack the 2 little fingers prying open the hook. You are not concentrating on getting over the hand but rather opening it up from the bottom end (pinky and ring fingers) at the same time getting your own wrist away from his. Then when you have the hand open you may come over or keep prying back.

Thanks buddy that clears it up. I still use mainly backpressure against good hooks but I will experiment with this move as well.

That move sounds like a textbook Vern Martel hit.

I tried what you said John, using the low hand toproll and it worked well. Thanks everyone for your input! I also found out the sweep works well also but demands an insane hand grip.

Benoit,
I love the sweep. For me anyways I dont give away much during the setup and it seems to work well against a hook or toproll. A high hook is pretty similar and there is some good info on the training board. Good luck!

I've heard it said that you only sweep if you KNOW you have total hand and wrist control. I think it requires a ton of strength in those areas. I have not personally tried this move.
Glad it worked for you Benoit. What weight class are you in? Cassleman is fairly close to Ottawa and I was wondering why you dont come to practice. Or do you have your own group of guys you pull with?
