At local events you run a lot fewer classes. At some of my events I run 5 right hand open, 4 right hand novice, 2 or 3 left and 2 right hand classes for the Ladies. Plus at local events I run 3 classes for kids( 4/6yrs, 7/9yrs, 10/12yrs).

I agree with the majority although I sympathize with Ryan. In Canada all the provinces have been asked to run a minimum of 6 sanctioned tournaments. You can run run more if you wish but only the best 6 of the athlete's results can count to National standings and you can count left and right arm into those points. Why 6 tournaments? Well back in the organizational days, Ryan's dilemma was what was at the forefront and 6 tournaments were a big deal for the fledgling provinces to commit to for the exact reasons Ryan is listing. Some have succeded and others are still struggling. Short answer, the more tournies the more exposure, the more chance of bringing someone out of the woodwork and people will recognize that armwrestling is a sport.

I found it painfully obvious just how unrecognized we are as a sport. I was asked by some Winnipeg media "why would you train for armwrestling" and found myself biting down hard on my tongue. My problem is that my most precious resource is time... and it is in small amounts these days.

Just finished an interview with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal. He's been accumulating info for several years and is quite up on armwrestling technique. He recognizes it as "definitely" being a sport and he has been intrigued with the ongoing saga of the 1998 WAF split and to where we have come to. He's of the opinion that it should be in the Olympics and that is great to know that an individual from the media recognizes what we all know about the sport of armwrestling. I guess that is our job to make sure that all the medias understand what it is we are doing and why. I understand your questioning of the small insignificant tournies Ryan but you'll never know when you'll uncover another Stan Relland, John Brezynk or a Ryan Espey. You'll never know when you may just turn some kids life around that couldn't compete in any other mainstream sports but excelled in armwrestling! That look of pride on their face is sure worth all that effort!
