I think you're right Jeff, that it probably isn't limiting this year. But if the Nationals were in Alberta, or even Saskatchewan, I think it would be.
As a fan of the sport, I think Nationals should feature Canada's best pullers, so I understand the desire to make Provincials a qualifier (i.e. top three can go). But as a competitor and former Nationals-promoter, I want the classes to be as full as possible.

The nationals will never have the countries best as it's an amateur event. If it's highly doubtful that more than 3 will go from Alberta, why have the rule? Forming an illusion of a tough event is not the same as an actual tough event.

We'll put Eric, that was my intentions for my post
All I can think of is Club owners making a line-up outside the empty dance club to make it seem more prestigious to enter

Well, if there were hundreds at provincials...qualifying top 3 makes sense to me. When we have very few, it's a non-issue. I think this is a path to actually valuing provincials and nationals. It's been too loosey-goosey to be cool. It could be prestigious again as we grow the sport. We qualify for world's, why not qualify for nationals?

And you may be right Chris that the best won't go to nats, as they focus on pro events. But to me this is irrelevant; to me it's better to have all the best of the amateurs at nationals- what is the point to diluting nationals classes with whoever wants to go? Nationals should be a tough, prestigious event and less of a fun-spiel IMO.

Because the WAF never had to say "sh*t, we only averaged 5 pullers per class". Our nationals is a slowly sinking boat and throwing in more requirements in order for someone to qualify is ludicrous.

Because it's much better for the sport and for the promoter to have 15 pullers in a class (even if 7 are walk in, non qualified pullers), than to have 75% of a classes participants walk away with a medal. Nothing demeans a sport more than winning a bronze medal without even winning a match. Oh.. But at least that bronze medalist was a "qualified" athlete because he/she took 3rd at the Alberta provincials, with 4 pullers in the class.

like jeff said its unlikely that more then 3 per class from alberta will go to nationals anyway, if any pullers in alberta don't like the rule change they have not spoken up.

Chris - take a chill pill, or a warm bath with bubbles in it...and relax...
