In my opinion the weight classes at Nationals and Worlds need to be reduced drastically.
Last Nationals we crowned about 55 National Champions not including the classes that were empty.
WAF has 120 classes including youth and NOT including the "optional" Senior Grand Masters classes (another 8). That is up to 128 WORLD CHAMPIONS being crowned every year.
Does any other "sport" do that? The NFL doesn't even make that many rings for their team and staff.
I know we cannot change this at the World level but there is no reason we cannot make a bold move in Canada.

I agree.
We need to stop all the ladies crying about 11 lb increments... especially if they cut weight to get there. What's even worse, some guys cut even more than 11 just to get into an even lower weight class.
Compete 2 hours after you weigh in, make fewer weight classes and let the show begin!!

Yup... "everyone gets a trophy" is ruining society.
Often a weight class is not governed by quality training and athleticism but rather lack of training and poor diet.
The rankings are so open to debate (one reason) is because there is an attempt to speculate at who would win in a much broader weight class.

This would make it more interesting also because there are lighter pullers that could easily take the higher weight class title if they wanted to. But they compete in the lower weight so they can attend worlds at that weight class!

Gotta totally agree with John Milne.
Weighing in two or so days before an event is ludicrious. I have heard that some ATHLETES will start intervenous drips after their weigh ins to get their body weight up before their competitions. PPAW always drank beer after the weigh ins!!!

I too would like the Canadian Championships to crown the top armwrestlers in the country every year. Fewer classes, stiffer competition. You win Nationals, you are the best in the country, period. The reality is that this is not the case. Nor will it be the case until
a) MAJOR prize money is given out (I’m thinking something like $10,000/$5,000/$2,000 per class), or
b) the sport becomes recognized by the government, opening up the door for government athlete sponsorship (though only those with a legitimate shot at doing well at Worlds would have this opportunity).
Unfortunately, to even have a chance at becoming recognized by the government, we need to get our participation numbers way up. And a National Championship with fewer weight classes will ultimately result in lower attendance numbers.

It is a paradox Eric... we need higher numbers, more money, and less weight classes in order to get government (and yes Olympic) recognition.
One problem being that we rely heavily on the competitors for the money. Less competitors = less money.
I like the "day of" weigh-ins. Pulling what you weigh... what a concept. It is challenging to do this at a National or World event, but not impossible. IPF Powerlifting makes you weigh-in on the day of the meet.

I too think less classes would be great BUT If you guys had only 154, 176, 198, 220 and Heavy.
What would you suggest about forming a Team to send to WAF Worlds. How would you determine who goes in the other classes.
