For the 2013 season, my goal is to get my Arm Melter tournaments out of bars and into fitness expos. This, will lead to increased exposure, and hopefully more opportunity for sponsorship - and making money.
In order to have a East vs West champion showdowns, you need to have money to make it happen. I'm not there yet.

An "expo" setting would also allow more competitors in a larger space (just be sure that there are enough seats for spectators and/or pullers waiting their turns, and that there is a good selection of food nearby). Could you imagine an event at a place (e.g. Loaded Dog) with double the number of entries as usual? The only bar locale that I've experienced that could hold such a large number would be the one in downtown Peterborough.

I like the way you think Joe. I looked through the American tournaments to see if I wanted to go to any, but I was seriously turned off by the fact that 99% of them are in bars. I think the sport will be better off getting out of the bars into the expos or whatever.
WEM has mirrored classes to Joe's Arm Melter, so they are compatible for finding a Western and Eastern champ.
The only thing I don't like about circumventing Nationals to find the best of the best, is that there aren't enough weight classes using 165, 187, 220, 220+ IMO. However, I think there are too dang many weight classes in Nationals still, which helps derail this process using the double elimination standard route.

After listening to some of the posts I am considering taking the $3000 I have raised thus far and attend Arnold's,US Open etc because Eric and Rick had some good points. No body from the east wants to fly out west except for Nationals the odd time (This year being a great example because it is cheaper for them to attend the MGC and eastern US tournaments. I gave away $10,000 Cash & prizes 3 years in a row after hosting nationals in 2008 because Casino Moose Jaw gave me $7500 cash to put on a great show but only Western Canadian and US pullers showed up.......and I think that if I do it again this will just happen again.... It is cheaper for us in Western Canada to attend tournaments here or go south due to airline prices . I know I can go to any west coast tourney in the US cheaper than flying to Eastern Canada and after putting on 3 major tournaments giving out over $30,000 in 3 years and not a single competior from eastern Canada showing up...I didn't know what I was thinking...... guess just hoping and praying they would come....even Brent Rakers came one year and pullers from South and North Dakota.....It is hard to support eastern tournaments when none of them want to come out west and support ours....Del's got the best ideas...Have a Western Nationals and a Easterns because no one is showing up for nationals anymore anyways....Like John said no one cares .....It has to be a big show with lights and TV and $$$ in a busy area with lots of pullers within 5 hours....Best I can do is get a bunch of Western Canadian pullers to come together for a paid out practise..(which I am thinking on doing...)......Its too bad because some of us have no problem getting sponsors etc for tournaments who just want to sponsor a kick ass event and be able to be a part of our exciting sport but if people don't want to attend to try and win there sponsorship $$$ its better I persuade them to sponsor local talent maybe......Maybe a Super match theme is the the way to go......more discussion is needed ....hmmmm.......Maybe the best Under 200lb puller period and give out $2000 for first and $1000 for second......lots of possibilities...

Don't read the board to much, but FYI Kelly won 3-1 cause of questionable reffing. Not a knock against him though he's a great puller. But he needs to get out of Alberta more to experience some different pullers and refs. Can't wait to do meet again though:)

Hey Kayne: don't be to quick to count out the tournment format, I believe that it is just a phase and people will start to travel again. You can only pull yourself and your freind so many times before you start looking for new blood.
The rankings are just one persons opinion. Focus on your big event and let the rankings take care of them selves. We will travel if there is a class for us and cash offered. JMO Joey
