Ken Herd is a many time Canadian National Champion. What is "good strength wise"? Should I take that to mean you have reached a level of strength that you are happy with and will now maintain? There must either be a weak spot in there or your position is wrong to defend. You can block the low hand toproll and variations by your arm position off the start but unless you have developed some good static strength in these positions you risk injury. thanks Espey . i accept that ...i will try to strengthen my wrist ...it must help me.

Never saw him at nationals before. I saw somebody beat him by beating his reaction time, or being loose at the start and catching seemed like the thing to do to me (I almost caught him in the left hook by staying loose, but elbow fouled, next try he flattened me).

I set up looses against various opponents for different reasons...
You can still have static pressure applied when the other person is loose. this will allow you to slow the hit down even if your a bit slow on the "go"

I always loose grip my opponents. I do this to enable me to attack for position in the hand. If I feel by my appononts grip that he is stronger in the hand or in the arm I will go even looser. You sound like a hooker. If so disregard your apponents grip and go lower on his hand, squeeze around his wrist. When setting up for your grip apply downwards pressure on his thumb at the same time, this will assist you in getting the hook on him.
