Name (First+Last): Lori Pow
Age or Birthday: May 13, 1962
Profession: Manager of Customer Services (Epic Information Solutions)
Height: 5' 9"
Biceps size:
Forearm size:
Location (City/Province/state): Winnipeg, MB.
Titles: Nationals 2004 (Portage la Prairie, MB.) 2 Firsts & 1 Third.
-Nationals 2005 (Quebec City) 2 Firsts & 2 Second Place Awards
-Nationals 2006 (Kelowna, BC) 3 Firsts & 1 Second Place Awards plus "Female Arm wrestler of the Year". Whoo Hooo, Great Day in the Mornin' that was!!
-Ruler of the Nation (Kansas City, Missouri / Nov. 10, 2007) First place both left & right
-Nationals 2008 (Moose Jaw, SK) 4 First Place Awards & Female Arm Wrestler of the Year Award.
Who do you train with/Team name: Team Manitoba
Years of Experience: 5 Years
Year you started pulling: 2003
Weight you compete at: 80+
Favorite Pulling style: Have not found a favorite pulling style as of yet, still have so much technique to learn, but often end up in a hook position.
Toughest Match you've pulled: Margie Worden (USA). It was in a tournament at Fort Randall Casino, SD about 4 years ago. After many fouls, warning and re-starts, I was exhausted and in disbelief at the end of it all that I actually beat her.
Favorite tournament you've attended: Nationals in Portage la Prairie as it was my very first National Event and I won my first 3 National titles there. The Nationals in Kelowna 2006, I won 3 first place, 1 second place along with "Female Arm Wrestler of the Year" awards. That, along with the house boat party afterward, an experience to remember that is for sure.
Supplements Used: ISO Whey Protein Powder and energy drinks.
Favorite Puller/or somebody you look up to in the sport: Can't say as I have a favorite puller as you learn and use a little bit from each and every person you practice with. I look up to Ryan Espey, Terry Debates and Mike Barrett from Team Manitoba for their never ending knowledge of the sport, technique and experience they have shared with me to help me improve in the sport of arm wrestling. Also have a big admiration for Vern Martel from BC for his spirit and motivation. Joyce King, "Queen of the Worlds", she rocks. John Bersenk (The Legend) whom I have never met but can't wait to some day do so.
How often do you train: Once a week with Team Manitoba and weight train about 3 times a week either on my own, with my boyfriend and fellow armwrester Darrell Steffensen or with my two adult sons. My oldest Darrick (24) who prefers the sheer brute strength "boot camp" work outs and my youngest Jordan (21-who is studying to be an athletic therapist) prefers the scientific approach to weight training. The way I see it, I have the best of both worlds.
Training tips: Practice, Practice, Practice. Just keep going and don't stop of slow down between events. Don't push injuries, they take a long time to heal but if you push it, they take an even longer to heal. Find something or someone that motivates you and incorporate it into your training somehow.
Goal(s): To win my first World's Title in Kelowna, BC in 2008
Sponsor(s): None (Anyone Interested ??)
Anything you would like to add/statements/comments: Thanks to all my family, especially my Dad, Mom and Sister who travel around and attend my tournaments to cheer me on. My Mom is an expert on strap matches now . Also my boyfriend Darrell who put up with sitting and watching me for two years before discovering it is more fun to compete than to watch. Now he has his own trophy rack which has increased in size over the last three years that he has been arm wrestling. Of course, thanks to everybody who helps me train and practice. I love it!!
