I do deadlifts. Do i do them with the notion that they help me with armwrestling at all? No.
Am I a top ranked armwrestler? No. I'm not. I just like lifting. If I didn't waste time training non-related movements and focused on armwrestling, i'd probably be a lot better.
I agree with Ryan in that a focus on deadlifts is not condusive to becoming a better armwrestler. I can dead over 500lbs raw at 185lbs... and can still beat guys who dead over 800... But get beaten by skinny guys way lighter than me who probably can't deadlift their groceries.
The skinny guys get strong by movement specific training and good nerual innervation patterns.
What carryover is there? maybe a bit of hand strength. The point being is that sport specific movement patterns need to be applied to become stronger in that position. Having a strong posterior chain is good for all sorts of things, but it won't transfer to the table. Deadlifting is good for deadlifting... If you want to deadlift more. Do deadlifts.
I'm all for absolute strength. Doing compound movements increases neural efficiency... but with the nature of our sport you'd be better doing movement related exercises. You don't see powerlifters armwrestling to increase their bench, or squat... Doing that would probably lower their 1RM by 80%
Just getting bigger doesn't make you stronger either.. or bodybuilders would have have a chance at the table. A bigger cross-sectional area of muscle doesn't imply strength because it's not increasingly innervated, you have to work for that specifically.
I could go on forever....

Well, I'm very fortunate to have an excellent club to practice with on a regular basis. Once weekly practices are taxing but I feel I am getting alot from it as well. That is something I will take advantage of as much as I can.
On a side note, the deadlifts are not a "staple" of my routine. They only comprise 1/2 a workout perhaps every 8 to 10 days, not a "focus" or "main" component as I seem to have misled some to believe.

I felt stronger at armwrestling practice having 2 weeks rest from the previous armwrestling practice than with just 1 week rest. Being relatively new to this sport (started March 2006), I was surprised at this. For my next tournament I'll keep this in mind.
I apologize to John for this off-topic question.
Brian, Who do you know that can deadlift over 800lbs? I don't believe anyone in the Canadian Powerlifting Union can deadlift this much.
Also, I don't find it hard to believe that you beat stronger powerlifting type guys at armwrestling, since the static strength component, the wrist, hand, and shoulder torsion muscles are all not trained much in powerlifting.

Darren Mehling from Manitoba pulled 805lbs in strongman... but it was a regular deadlift and he would have easily made the attempt at a powerlifting meet... and had lots left in the tank.
... I know... I am not Brian. lol

I got this from http://www.powerlifting.ca: The current drug tested Canadian Powerlifting Union deadlift record is 346kg (763 pounds) by Tom Nichols. Prior to 1987 the non-drug tested record was 365kg (805 pounds) by T. Maggae.
Therefore, it seems that this Darren could easily beat the current deadlift record provided he doesn't take steroids, and uses the approved equipment. Unfortunately, "supportive" equipment in powerlifting (and maybe even strongman?) like deadlift suits which act like springs to assist the lift, makes it hard to compare lift totals.

A friend of mine/guy I train with sometimes... at 265lbs I think he's pulled just under 700 in competition as a Junior lifter.. he's 22 now I think. And more recently I've seen him pull around 800 sumo at the gym.. Guy Page... i think he has the current junior record? i don't know exactly where he stands at the moment.. all MPA meets I was just speculating anyhow

He was using a 1 ply singlet... so yes... I guess he could break the record. Of course he is not a powerlifter... he is now a bodybuilder. The lifts were aired on TSN when they showed the Westerns...

Can I chime in here??
Do you think an explosive movement such as power cleans or snatches would be better lifts for AW? Just for overall body strength/explosiveness? I have never done it for AW but am considering it if I can ever get my lower back healthy again.
I Rest for 1.5 to 2 weeks before a large event.

Power cleans I think would be good.
